Cultivation: Ebracteola is easy to grow and rewarding plants than can be grown in pots or in the rock-garden.. These plants grow on summer rain areas and were heading for winter dormancy. They can be watered year-round, water regularly from spring to Autumn but reduce watering frequency in winter, growth period is early Spring to late Summer, but is a very adaptable species that can grows opportunistically whenever the water availability and growing condition are favourable. Keep them cool, and half-shaded in summer, need full sun or light shade on the other seasons. PottedEbracteola look best in a heavy soil and the same is true for plants in a rockery. Requires good drainage. Frost Tolerance: quite frost hardy and grows best where there are cold winters (it is reported to be hardy to at least -10° C if very dry). Propagation: Seeds, cuttings
Remarks: Ebracteola has a gorgeous, thick root system and when it is potted up, the plant can be progressively raised over the ground so that some of the roots can be seen and is especially cultivated for their looks. Architecturally it is a real stunner. When the "caudex" shape of the raised roots is adequately in evidence this plant is incomparable. They also tend to grow more "heads" when they are raised. This plant is suitable for growing indoors. Excellent for brightly lit atrium or windowsill.

Dudleya farinosa, native to the coasts of central and northern California, forms attractive star-shaped rosettes of slender powdery-white leaves. Forms mats as rosettes split dichotomously (the rosette slowly divides into two rosettes). Flowers are greenish-yellow, appearing in late winter and spring. Bright light or full sun. In habitat, most Dudleyas and Echeverias grow on rocky outcroppings, at higher altitudes. In this habitat, the water drains quickly away from the roots of the plant, never allowing the plant to remain waterlogged. For this reason, it is essential in cultivation to use a very porous soil, which will allow quick drainage. Frost tolerant, but best to give frost protection to prevent scarring. |

Echeveria pulvinata 'Frosty' forms rosettes of chunky, spatulate leaves covered densely with snow white hairs giving the the plant the appearance of "frosted" velour. Arching racemes of bell-shaped orange flowers. Beautiful color accent for wreaths, dish gardens and rock gardens. Can also be used as a groundcover. In habitat, many Echeverias grow on rocky outcroppings at higher altitudes. In this habitat, the water drains quickly away from the roots of the plant, never allowing the plant to remain waterlogged. For this reason, it is essential in cultivation to use a very porous soil, which will allow quick drainage. Bright light is required to prevent "stretching" of Echeverias ("stretching" occurs when a moderately fast growing plant such as an Echeveria, is grown in dim light or over-fertilized, which causes overly lush growth that contributes to weak, pallid plants). Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Protect from frost. |

Ihlenfeldtia H.E.K. Hartmann - A small genus of three to five species (only two are recognized at present), all well worth growing for their sharp-bladed leaves and superb flowers. Those are usually a deep golden yellow, but several pastel shades are found, and some exceptional variants of I. excavata (I. “vanbredai”) have dark pink flowers with lilac grey pollen. Easily grown if given sufficient light, all ihlenfeldtias prefer mabel-mix. They are active in fall and winter, flowering in early spring.
Note: These species were formerly placed in Cheiridopsis. Ihlenfeldtia “vanbredai”, Cheiridopsis dilatata and C. albirosea = I. excavata, Cheiridopsis vanzylii = I. vanzylii. There are only the two species. Hartmann, Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants, 2001. This plant is of South African origin. It lives in a very dry belt of desert which recieves all year round rain of about 100mm a year. Despite this, it is like its distant cousins Conophytum, geared up to winter growth.
It probably should have a summer rest period with no water. Athough you could experiment with this. The plant doesent form buds properly unless you water it well in the fall. Having said that never soak the pot unless you live in a hot area (like southern california) with reliable weather. Dont water more than once a week or the plant will become bloated and split. Plants from very arid reqions like Namaqualand and Namibia often dont have a 'water stop valve' in thier roots. They will just continue absorbing until they burst.
If you water it responsibly in the winter it will show you its buds by December. By late January it should be in flower.
The flowers are a wonderful fresh yellow. They get larger year after year as the plant matures.
Ihlenfeldtia is related to Chieridopsis. It grows well from seed. |

Beautiful Gasteria - no two are quite alike due to the genetic mix from parent plants. Some with more texture and lighter color of first parent others favoring the second parent, all with fat leaves. Gasteria species should be grown in well-drained, sandy soils. The majority of the species prefer light shade and should be protected from direct sunlight or other extreme conditions. Inorganic pebble mulch can be placed around the plant to prevent weeds from growing. The mulch, along with any other compost or bone meal, should be applied at the beginning of growing season. Seed germination usually occurs within 8 days but may take as long as one month depending on the species.Watering should occur frequently in the spring, summer, and autumn, but should not overwhelm the plant. It is suggest ed to suspend watering the Gasteria in the winter. Re-pot the Gasteria every 3 to 4 years. Gasteria contains about 20 species of South African succulents related to the Aloes. The flowers have a characteristic shape, and their shape is very important in the classification of Gasterias. The name Gasteria comes from the Latine for 'stomach', and refers to the shape of the flower. When trying to identify a Gasteria, it is important to notice that juvenile Gasterias have very different shapes and colors from the adult specimens. Most gasterias tolerate low light levels, and can be used as house plants. Propagation is mostly by offsets, and leaf cuttings. |

Pleiospilos nelii is the bi-lobe known as "Split Rock". Native to Africa. Extremely succulent pair of grayish-green leaves form a clefted "egg-shape" known as a bi-lobe. Leaves are dotted with a myriad of tiny dots which are actually stomates. Can grow quite large to 4" in diameter. Silky golden-apricot flowers with white centers. The genus Pleiospilos is part of the family Aizoaceae, which includes the various forms of plants known as "Ice Plants" and those known as "Mimicry Plants". Porous soil with excellent drainage. It is preferable that the soil does not contain much organic material, such as peat moss and that the plant is not fertilized with heavy nitrogen as this can cause an explosion of soft, flabby growth that can make the plant prone to bacterial rots. Decomposed granite is often an excellent media as it has many trace minerals and is similar to the South African quartz fields where these and others of the "Stone Mimicry" are found growing. Bright light with ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry during the active growing season. Protect from frost. |
