Echinocereus Viridiflorus (David's Hedgehog, Green Flowered Hedgehog) is an endangered species. Echinocereus have a shallow root system. They need to be watered thoroughly in spring and summer, and then much less in winter. They will bloom only if they get enough water.
This cactus shrivels and become flat at the beginning of the winter. This species hails from Northern Mexico, USA (Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, South Dakota, Oklahoma) . This small hedgehog forms small clusters of two or three stems. Bright red and white spines contrast nicely with the bright green flowers that encircle the stem in late spring. Flowers are quite fragrant, often with a hint of citrus. These plants were grown from seeds collected in north central New Mexico. These plants can grow in colder climates because the stems clump so closely together. This reduces surface area through which it can lose heat. Protect from frost.
