The genus Copiapoa contains over 20 species coming from the Atacama desert, on the coastline of northern Chile. The name Copiapoa comes from the city of Copiapó in northern Chile. These cactus have adapted to meeting their water need from the fog that often blanket the coast, since it rains there excessively rarely. They grow slowly in cultivation, and their appearance changes.
This plant needs good drainage and very porous potting mix. It is spherical 4.8 to 8 inches tall (12 to 20 cm), 7.2 in. (18 cm) in diameter; 11 to 17 ribs; 0 to 3 central spines, 0.4 to 2 inches (1 to 5 cm) long; 5 to 10 radial spines, 1 inch (2.5 cm) long. This one has scented yellow flowers, 1.5 inches in diameter (4 cm); red fruit 1 inch long (2.5 cm); the seeds are black
In Winter, keep dry. Should be protected from excessive heat and sun in summer .and water sparingly. Propagation through seeds.
