Aloe Vera

Aloe Barbadensis

This is the real thing! There are some lesser varieties that claim to be the “Medicine Plant,” but this is the one that produces large quantities of medicinal gel in its long, strap-like leaves. The color of the foliage is a beautiful green color with slight tints of a light lime green, bearing dramatic 3 ½’spikes of brilliant yellow flowers in late winter through summer. Though this plant will tolerate some shade, and even achieve foliage colors that are a little bit more on the green side, it is best in full sun. The large rosettes can grow to be 2 1/2’ tall, and will pup out to the sides, forming clumps up to a few feet wide. Aloe vera, or Aloe barbadensis, forms upright, clustering rosettes of fleshy grayish-green lanceolate leaves. Juvenile plants have leaves with spots, and rather than forming rosettes, usually have leaves in opposing ranks. Flowers are yellow and are borne on tall spikes, often visited by hummingbirds. Native to the Canary Islands. Considered to have medicinal and emollient properties. Used widely in shampoos and skin lotions. Excellent for patio plant or in landscapes. Porous soil with adequate drainage. Bright light to full sun. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Protect from frost.

Allow 2-3 weeks shipping time.
